FARN presents a new report that explains how the climate crisis affects the biological diversity of the Tropical Andes and shows the importance of the natural ecosystems of that region to face this crisis.
Mountain regions are key indicators of climate change and highlight the close relationship that exists between this crisis and the increasing loss of biodiversity.
The Andes are no exception. Its tropical areas constitute one of the regions most vulnerable to changes in climate. From northern Argentina to Venezuela, these mountains are home to exceptional species richness that is increasingly threatened by both climate change and changes in land use.
If we do not limit global warming to 1.5 ° C, the impacts on the biodiversity of the Andes and, therefore, on the fundamental services that they provide to human societies, will become increasingly serious.
The new FARN report «Climate Change and Biodiversity in the Tropical Andes» compiles and presents in an understandable way the scientific information available regarding the main impacts of climate change on the biodiversity of the Tropical Andes; highlights, in turn, the fundamental role played by Andean natural ecosystems in mitigating and adapting to climate change.
